This week we read a story about Herschel of Osteropol a common character in the folklore of Eastern European Jews. His stories always have a bit of wit and cleverness. This telling of the story is based on the one found in the book The Adventures of Herschel of Ostropol retold by Eric A Kimmel

That was a great story and I loved the enactment of the interaction between Herschel and the innkeeper about what his father did.
I haven't heard a lot of Eastern European Jewish folklore before, but earlier this year I heard Polish-born Rabbi Reb Zalman speak in Boulder. I was extremely impressed, as he seemed to be a walking encyclopedia of this kind of "old school" lore and wisdom.
Have you met him before?
Reb Zalman is a great guy and he actually lives in Boulder. His depth and breadth of knowledge, not to mention his experiences is amazing. He is a good friend of mine and my husband.
